Staying Positive In Tough Times

Back to the basics!

All of us can remember the times that were.... it was you, a couple of key people, and ‘the team’ ... you were involved in every aspect of the operation ... things seemed to run smoother and you made more money, you controlled expenses, you knew everything that was going on in your business.

Then when times get better, we get lazy. We tend to sit back and let things move along at their own pace ... we’re making good money, the bills are paid, and the employees aren’t complaining. Well perhaps now is the time to wake up, move past the notion that everything else is the reason we don’t make money, and get back on the line.

Times have gotten tougher, wages are up, cost of goods is up, cover numbers are down, and the taxes are due. Food suppliers are becoming less cooperative; they have their own set of problems and have learned that one little restaurants business is not that important.

When things get tough, it’s time to get back to basics. It’s time to dig in and work the front-end, and then help push the orders out of the back fast and correct. You are going to have the responsibility of setting the pace of your restaurant, especially during slower times. Just as you are unsure in these tougher economic times, you must set the example to employees ... and your customers!

Customers and employees both desire to interact with owners and managers that are positive and upbeat. Customers want relaxation from the world, a break from bad news, lost jobs, household chores, the kids and hundreds of other daily problems. As a restaurant owner you must give them this respite, you must offer an atmosphere that is friendly, inviting, warm, cozy, and makes them feel wanted.

Finally, when things get tough, take your employees and go have a picnic. Take time to build some company spirit de corps, do some employee morale building, maybe pass out some bonuses, or give some key employees raises. Do something to get your staff excited. Remember, when times are tough, your employees are also having it tough. Give and receive motivation from your employees.

Find some enthusiasm! When times get tough, it’s time to find a friend or source for an attitude adjustment. Sometimes we all need a pickup. In my case, its a friend of mine, he always has a positive attitude, 15 minutes around him and you come away with a refreshed positive outlook on life. Surround yourself with positive people and get excited about things!

Make plans! I’m not talking about thinking about what you need to do, but make some time to sit down and analyse every aspect of your operation. Look at things you want to do, things you need to do ... and things that you don’t take time to see in your everyday travels around your restaurant. Look into the corners and try to see what customers see. Prioritise your ‘things to do’ and write them down on paper, set deadlines with realistic goals, and then get up and go get it done!

Good Luck
